Love for Reading at Stephenson

At Stephenson, we foster a love of reading and aim for all of our children to develop a love for reading.

Key ways we promote reading for pleasure in school are:

Class Reading

Each class spends time reading a book for pleasure. These books are chosen carefully for the year groups and are read by teachers on a regular basis to engage all children in reading, talking about stories and exploring vocabulary. Books are chosen from our Reading Spine, linked to our projects or from library recommendations. We make sure the book classes read are high quality, rich in vocabulary but most importantly capture the imagination and interest of the children.

Reading Assemblies

Once a week children have a Reading Assembly; this is to provide another opportunity to listen to a book to enjoy it and discuss it.

Key Stage 1: Thursday mornings.

Key Stage 2: Wednesday mornings.

Home School Reading

Each day a book is sent home to read for fun. Some of these books will be sent home to be:

  • Read by an adult to the child to enjoy;

  • Read by the child with help from an adult to enjoy;

  • Read by the child to an adult to share a book they are enjoying.

Our aim and purpose of this is to just enjoy time reading a book and for our children to share a love for reading with family at home.

Below shows books in our reading spine, which will be added to by class teachers.
